Only this morning I read one report that claims that "95% of email marketing messages" won't be deliverable in the near future. Every day we read new, and increasingly intense, articles about how Habeas will put us all out of business. Yet in the face of what is undeniably a troubling situation, I know people who have only started marketing via email (primarily using ezines) in the last few months and are prospering. Given these two seemingly opposite pieces of evidence, I wonder if it's time to revisit the basic tenets of successful email marketing? In that light, I offer these five ways to succeed with email marketing in any environment. One. Understand that it takes work. If there really is an automated way to spend a few hours a week working at an online business and make big bucks I respectfully ask to see the proof. Feel free to email me with the details, but only if you are personally making over $200,000 a year. ;) The Internet provides a wonderful opportunity to anyone willing to work, learn and apply the skills they gain. It's also the fastest way short of Las Vegas to go broke if you are looking for a quick buck. Like any business, look at your online business as a long-term venture and you will do well. Which brings us to point #2. Two. Commit to quality. Want to know the absolute, #1, surefire way to beat the spam filters at their own game? Produce information that is so valuable that readers will take action in order to receive it and notice when they don't receive it. It's all too easy to blame filters for non-delivery when in fact readers don't take what we say seriously because we don't stand out from the crowd. We, as email marketers, have an obligation to produce content of such high quality that readers clamor for it. Doing this is actually quite easy if what you have to say is relevant to your reader's life and comes from your heart. Commit to quality and the marketplace will reward you. Three. Be personal. I've spoken to so many people over the years that said "I'm not a writer so I can't produce an ezine (or write an article, or a sales letter, etc.)" But once I see what they have written I'm shocked by their insight, desire to succeed and skill. Some of the best ezines I've ever read wouldn't hold up to an examination by a fourth grade English teacher ... but they changed my life by teaching me something. Do that, change their life and teach them something, and your email marketing will be well received. Four. Be flexible. I can't recall a time on the Net where being flexible was more important than now. If spam filters are killing us we must learn to adapt. We must be informed. We must adapt. We must overcome. If our email does not get through we must find a way to get the message to readers another way. If readers want HTML we give it to them. If they want weekly editions vs. bi-weekly, we meet that need. You will never go wrong meeting the needs of your readers. Which leads to point five. Five. Know your readers. Readers are individuals, just like you and me. Great email marketing is a lot less about using pithy wording and making an emotional appeal that it is about knowing and meeting the needs of your subscribers. The good news is that subscribers love to interact. They love to tell you about their needs dreams and desires. The more you listen the more you can meet those needs and make the profits you seek. Is it too late to begin email marketing successfully? No way. Use the five suggestions above as a platform and begin to build your email marketing business today. Just like the story of Chicken Little, there will always be those who claim the sky is falling. Don't let them dissuade you from acting. Commit to quality, be yourself and provide a product or service of value. Combine those things with a little "sweat of the brow" and you simply cannot help but doing well. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Charlie Page is the owner of the Directory of Ezines, the first and most comprehensive list of quality ezines that accept advertising available on the Internet. Some Guys Do Have All The Luck. Here's How to Join Them" (Money, August 2003 pp85). In it he describes the patterns that "lucky" people follow and how to increase your odds of success by basically placing yourself in the "right place at the right time." Can you always be in the right place at the right time? Not really, unless you broaden your definition of that phrase a bit, as I have. MORE... My Definition of The Right Place at The Right Time: "Putting yourself in every corner of your market niche in some fashion so as to be in front of customers and people who can further your business through partnerships, buyouts, joint ventures and many other opportunities that only come through the luck you *create* by being active and involved in your niche." Zweig talks about the fact that some people seem actually "skillful" at being lucky. A British psychologist, Richard Wiseman, even wrote a new book on the subject called "The Luck Factor." (See www.luckfactor.co.uk) Wiseman did a study on over 400 people who thought of themselves as either very lucky or unlucky. "He found that some are indeed luckier than others, that lucky people share similar attitudes and that many apparently random outcomes can be controlled" says Zweig. Think of the first person that comes to mind who owns an online business and who you think of as "lucky." Actually, think of about 5 people. Should be an easy list to make - they are your competition, or business owners you admire, most likely. Now, what trait would you say your list of 5 lucky people share? I would venture to say they all share the same trait of being, at one point or another, "in the right place at the right time." How did they do it? Was it really blind luck? Are the odds dismal? The same as winning your state lottery jackpot? Not even close! Although there are some people who really cannot explain their luck, and who truly were just "touched by an angel," most successful people are successful because they are engaged to the hilt in their business. They are active promoters of their businesses in a radical way. They all have a fanatical involvement in networking themselves and their businesses. The biggest mistake I see people make with their online businesses is that they separate their "self" from their business. They let the products speak for themselves, which is ok as one component of a marketing campaign, but that's not enough. They also successfully market *themselves* as well as their business. They see themselves as important factors in the success and identity of their business. "Lucky" people see no separation of the two in fact. Products and services are inanimate "things." They are nothing really, without the people behind the scenes who put themselves in front of the scenes as much as possible and let others get to know THEM. Why do you think so many people come back from conferences with stories of how they landed a great partner they never thought they'd even get to answer an email? Conferences and seminars are the epitome of "creating luck." The least important thing about them is the formal ceremonies. The good stuff happens at the bar in the hotel after the presentations are over. The "good stuff" is being in the right place at the right time. You are definitely creating luck whenever you network with peers and possible partners. If you let yourself get lost in the day-to-day operations of your business and you don't allow yourself time to think about the ways in which you can get your "self" in front of the people who can break you into a whole new league of success for your business, you will be less "lucky" in business. There are lots of real rags-to-riches stories on the net. People are succeeding and profiting online like never before, but few do it in a vacuum. You will find more often than not that a story of success will begin with a line like "My business REALLY took off when I met..." or "I was talking on the phone one day with...and all the sudden an idea was born." Want to create some luck for yourself? Get involved in your business at a level in which you are always in the right place at the right time. Being active in online forums, calling people on the phone rather than using email, meeting people in person who can help you get your products in front of thousands of potential customers, all these practices are used by the ever-lucky, most successful people on the planet. Put yourself into your business as part of the product. Develop relationships. Run far far away from people who want to sell you on the concept that you can succeed online without having to talk with or meet others. Success has never knocked on the door of people who aren't open to human contact - that's a ridiculous and self-defeating practice. If you are passionate about making money with an online or offline business, good old fashioned networking will always win out over any other method of advertising. So, now you have the formula for "creating luck." If you can sit down this weekend and figure out all the ways you can put yourself in the right place at the right time to increase your business - including a powerful linking campaign for your website - you are going to start to see that there is a pattern indeed to creating luck and making things happen for your business. I am here to tell you - the time has come to face your website! A high search engine ranking for your website is so essential that if you have the slightest desire to actually succeed in your business, there is no way you can continue to avoid this issue. At least 85% of people looking for goods and services on the Internet find websites through search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. The idea of optimizing your pages for high search engine rankings is to attract targeted customers to your site who will be more than likely to make a purchase. The higher your page comes up in search engine results, the greater the traffic that is directed to your website. That's what search engine optimization is about. You can immerse yourself in all the technical information available online to figure out how to optimize your web pages to achieve higher rankings. Or you can look at a few simple items on your pages, make some small adjustments, and most likely see improved rankings quite rapidly. The first item you should examine is the title bar on your homepage. The title bar is the colored bar at the top of the page. Look at the words that appear there when you access your home page. To increase search engine rankings, the words on your homepage's title bar should include the most important keywords or phrases, one of which would include your company name. Then click on all your links and examine the title bars on the pages you access. Each title bar on every single page of your site should contain the most important keywords and phrases taken from the page itself. However, avoid very long strings of keywords, keeping them to six words or less. Avoid repeating keywords more than once in the title bars, and make sure that identical words are not next to each other. The next item to put under your microscope is your website content. Search engines generally list sites that contain quality content rather than scintillating graphics. The text on your site must contain the most important keywords - the words that potential customers will be typing into search engines to find your site. Aim to have around 250 words on each page, but if this is not desirable due to your design, aim for at least 100 carefully chosen words. If you want to achieve a high ranking on search engines, this text is essential. However, the search engines must be able to read the text, meaning that the text must be in HTML and not graphic format. To find out if your text is in HTML format, take your cursor and try to highlight a word or two. If you are able to do this, the text is HTML. If the text will not highlight, it is probably in graphic form. In this case, ask your webmaster to change the text into HTML format in order to increase your search engine rankings. Next we come to what is called meta tags. I know this sounds like something out of science fiction, but it is really just simple code. Many people believe that meta tags are the key to high search engine rankings, but in reality, they only have a limited effect. Still, it's worth adding them in the event that a search engine will use meta tags in their ranking formula. To find out if your page is set up with meta tags, you must access the code. To do this, click the "view" button on the browser menu bar, and select "source." This will pull up a window revealing the underlying code that created the page. If there are meta tags, they usually appear near the top of the window. For example, a meta tag would read: meta name="keywords" content=. If you do not find code that reads like this, ask your webmaster to put them in. This may not do much for your search engine rankings, but any little boost helps. Lastly, we come to the issue of link popularity. This is a factor that is extremely important in terms of search engine rankings. Almost all search engines use link popularity to rank your website. Link popularity is based on the quality of the sites you have linked to from your links page. If you type in "free link popularity check" in a popular search engine, the search engine will then show you what sites are linked to your site. In the case that there aren't many sites linked up to yours, or that the sites that are linked up have low search engine rankings, consider launching a link popularity campaign. Essentially, this entails contacting quality sites and requesting that they exchange links with your site. Of course, this requires checking out the rankings of the websites you want to link up with. Linking to popular, quality sites not only boosts your search engine ranking, but it also directs more quality traffic to your website. Search engine rankings are extremely important for a successful Internet marketing campaign. Before you go out and hire a search engine optimization company, try taking some of the simple steps listed above, and see if you can't boost your rankings yourself. Don't ever ignore this all-important factor in Internet marketing. Remember, the higher your search engine ranking, the more quality customers will be directed your way. Residual income affiliate programs are one of the most reliable ways to make consistent monthly income. Residual income is one of the most sort after areas in sales. Residual sales can provide a reliable regular source of income to help toward future planning and even retirement. With Residual Income Affiliate (RIA) programs you are paid a set amount each month for every customer you have introduced and has carried on using their service. The services are wide and varied and can be web hosting, online dating or membership sites etc. That is were the power is in these programs, whereas regular affiliate programs you get paid a once off sum for the sale you produce, and after while you tend to run out of buying customers, so you have to quickly move on to another affiliate program to keep trying to make a monthly wage. For example, lets say you sold a web hosting account and for every sale you get $10. You get a customer to sign up, and they use the merchant's service for say 6 months, you get paid a percentage of the sale for 6 months. At first glance $10 does not seem a lot but after 6 months you have made $60 from this customer. You just need to keep adding customers to provide a nice regular monthly income. The best thing is, a lot of these services are necessities, therefore, as long as the company provides a good service with value for money there is no reason for the customer to go elsewhere. Choosing the right Affiliate Program Find the right topic for you something that interests you and see if there are any good residual affiliate programs in that topic to join, you should be looking for a program that pays over $10 per month. Try to keep away from choosing Internet Marketing related programs. Online dating, health and beauty, education or even web hosting is better. You will, of course, need to know something about the product or service you are selling because your going to have to do a little bit of writing on the subject. How do you choose a good affiliate program from a bad one. You have probably heard about some of the scams affiliate program owners have pulled like not paying commissions or stealing traffic, but there are some really good affiliate programs about. This is what to look for in choosing a Residual Income Affiliate Program: 1. Payment $10 monthly or more. This is critical if you begin by promoting affiliate programs that pay any less, you may have problems breaking even on advertising costs, unless your advertising is free. What you need to aim for advertising your first affiliate program to break even on the first month, if you can break even on the advertising for the first month, you are doing very well. For example: say you spend $100 on advertising, but for that $100 you get 10 new sign ups for your affiliate program at $10 each e so that's $100 a month there, plus on top of that you get 100 new subscribers to your mailing list to contact anytime you have new offers. 2. Any emails are answered promptly. Email them and ask them questions about their affiliate program, if don't hear back from them promptly or not at all, this a sure sign that thay do not take their affiliate program seriously. The for support you and your future customers will probably bad. If they answer their emails quickly and are knowledgeable and to point, then this is a good sign to join with confidence. 3. Make certain that their product meets your own standards. It is generally best to used the product yourself and found it useful; otherwise it will be extremely difficult to write positive things about it in your write up 4. Check that they have not got a bad reputation concerning treatment of their affiliates or customers service. You will be fighting an uphill battle if there are bad issues here. Finally Residual Income Affiliate Programs are the easiest and fastest way to provide residual income streams. There is no customer support, no emails to answer or anything like that. You promote it and collect the pay checks! Instead of promoting 40 or 50 one off sale affiliate programs, you can promote 10 to 12 monthly programs instead. Make your goal to get 500 paying monthly customers by the end of 12 months. Being very conservative let us say that each of those 500 people only sign up for a $10 affiliate program you are promoting, but that's 500 by 10? $5000 a month! And that is on total autopilot. There are hundreds of people doing just that! They are now doing what ever they want! Because every month some nice big cheques arrive in the mail...isn't it about time you joined them? Before you start having those big cash flow dreams, stop and get some tips for having an online business. There are many internet information resources for doing this sort of thing. Here are some basic tips on how to start making money online. It takes time and work to build a business anywhere. If you want to build a business, you will have to be willing to research and be patient. Nothing happens instantly and no one is going to hand you the silver platter with all the answers to make money online. There is a lot of writing that goes into an online business. Write a business plan and revise that plan periodically. Your business plan should be thought of as a living document. As with any business, you will initially find out what works and what does not work and will have to change your plan accordingly. Be very careful about buying web space and pre-packaged website templates for your business. You'll find that down the road it will be difficult to change the site plus get source code to it. You need to be reasonable with yourself, and learn patience. It’s better outsourcing the web design with a freelancer and purchasing your own domain and installing the site yourself in some cases to make money online. Run your online business like a business. You will need to discipline yourself with working hours to take care of all offsite matters because you will have them. A lot of people make the mistake of treating their internet business merely as a website, which can be very detrimental because running an online business requires an approach that you would have with an offline business. Once you have your site built and online, your next job will be to let the world know you are there. This is the biggest job there is to make money online. It is a never ending task. Some other marketing ideas to make money online include posting your web address on the back windshield of your vehicle or coordinating with other websites to include a back link to your site. Word of mouth is always one of the best tools for advertising your site. With the advent of Google Adword, Overture and other similar advertising, it is possible to drive targeted traffic to your site by finding keywords that have very low bids. You will be able to measure your conversion ratio of such traffic with sales in real-time. These are the basic things that are needed to make money online. If any of these things are missing there could be lost information or inefficiency in how the online business works. You will find that in the course of your new online business that the money is first-rate for the amount of time you invest into it.
